Dussehra (Vijayadashami)

What

Dussehra falls on the tenth day, right after Navaratri, and is widely marked by the burning of large effigies of the demon king Ravana, along with his brother and son, in public grounds.

Why

The day celebrates Rama's victory over Ravana at the end of the Ramayana, and separately, in some traditions, Durga's victory over Mahishasura — two different stories converging on the same date, both centered on rightful strength overcoming a genuinely formidable threat.

Preparation

• Attend or watch a Ravana effigy burning if held locally
• Read or recall the closing chapters of the Ramayana
• Begin a new venture or piece of learning, considered auspicious on this day
• Exchange greetings with neighbors and family

Sarva Dharman Parityajya Mam Ekam Sharanam Vraja — abandon all other pursuits and take refuge in me alone.
