Holi
What
Holi begins the evening before with Holika Dahan, a bonfire symbolizing the burning away of negativity, followed the next morning by the joyful throwing of colored powders and water among family, friends, and neighbors.
Why
The story traces to Prahlad, a devotee protected despite his aunt Holika's attempt to burn him — a reminder that sincerity outlasts ill intent. The color-throwing that follows is a lighter, communal counterpart: a day where usual social distances soften.
Preparation
- Gather natural or skin-safe colored powders
- Prepare a fire-safe space for Holika Dahan the evening before
- Wear old clothes you don't mind staining
- Keep water and snacks ready for guests
Mantra
Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah — may all beings be happy and free from illness.
