Janmashtami
What
Janmashtami is marked by fasting through the day, devotional singing, and midnight celebrations — since Krishna is traditionally said to have been born at midnight — including the reenactment of his infancy through cradle ceremonies and, in some regions, the dahi handi tradition of forming human pyramids to break a suspended pot of curd.
Why
The festival marks Krishna's birth to Devaki and Vasudeva in a prison cell, and his secret transport across a flooding river to safety that same night — a story of vulnerability and protection that sets up the whole of his later life as narrated in the Bhagavata Purana.
Preparation
- Observe a full or partial fast until midnight if that's your practice
- Decorate a small cradle or image of baby Krishna
- Stay awake for midnight prayers
- Prepare or share Krishna's favorite foods, like milk-based sweets
Mantra
Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya — salutations to the divine Vasudeva.
