Maha Shivaratri
What
Devotees observe a fast through the day and often stay awake through the night, visiting Shiva temples to offer bael leaves, water, and milk to the lingam, and chanting through the night rather than sleeping.
Why
The night is associated with several stories — Shiva's cosmic dance, and in some tellings the night he drank the poison churned from the ocean to protect the universe, holding it in his throat rather than letting it spread. The all-night vigil mirrors that same quality: staying alert and present through darkness rather than avoiding it.
Preparation
- Plan a partial or full fast for the day
- Gather bael leaves, water, and milk if visiting a temple
- Set aside time to stay awake into the night, even briefly
- Chant Om Namah Shivaya through the vigil
Mantra
Om Namah Shivaya — salutations to Shiva.
