बन्धुरात्मात्मनस्तस्य येनात्मैवात्मना जितः । अनात्मनस्तु शत्रुत्वे वर्तेतात्मैव शत्रुवत् ॥
For one who has conquered the mind, the mind is their friend. But for one who has failed to do so, the mind acts like an enemy.
यद्यद्विभूतिमत्सत्त्वं श्रीमदूर्जितमेव वा । तत्तदेवावगच्छ त्वं मम तेजोंऽशसम्भवम् ॥
Whatever is glorious, beautiful, or powerful in this world, know that it springs from a mere fraction of my radiance.
ममैवांशो जीवलोके जीवभूतः सनातनः । मनःषष्ठानीन्द्रियाणि प्रकृतिस्थानि कर्षति ॥
An eternal fragment of myself becomes a living being in this world, drawing to itself the mind and five senses that rest in nature.
कुर्वन्नेवेह कर्माणि जिजीविषेच्छतं समाः । एवं त्वयि नान्यथेतोऽस्ति न कर्म लिप्यते नरे ॥
One should wish to live a hundred years, doing one's duties. Living this way, action does not cling to a person; there is no other way.
पत्रं पुष्पं फलं तोयं यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति । तदहं भक्त्युपहृतमश्नामि प्रयतात्मनः ॥
Whoever offers me a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or even water with devotion, I accept that offering of love from the pure of heart.
मन्मना भव मद्भक्तो मद्याजी मां नमस्कुरु । मामेवैष्यसि युक्त्वैवमात्मानं मत्परायणः ॥
Fix your mind on me, be devoted to me, offer your actions to me, and bow to me. Uniting yourself this way, you will surely reach me.
श्रेयो हि ज्ञानमभ्यासाज्ज्ञानाद्ध्यानं विशिष्यते । ध्यानात्कर्मफलत्यागस्त्यागाच्छान्तिरनन्तरम् ॥
Knowledge is better than mere practice, meditation is better than knowledge, and letting go of the fruits of action is better still than meditation — peace follows close behind that letting go.
व्यवसायात्मिका बुद्धिरेकेह कुरुनन्दन । बहुशाखा ह्यनन्ताश्च बुद्धयोऽव्यवसायिनाम् ॥
Those who are resolute have a single, focused purpose. The thinking of the irresolute branches out endlessly.
यावानर्थ उदपाने सर्वतः सम्प्लुतोदके । तावान्सर्वेषु वेदेषु ब्राह्मणस्य विजानतः ॥
To one who has realized the truth, scriptures are of no more use than a small well is when there is water flooding everywhere.
परित्राणाय साधूनां विनाशाय च दुष्कृताम् । धर्मसंस्थापनार्थाय सम्भवामि युगे युगे ॥
To protect the virtuous, to destroy the wicked, and to firmly establish righteousness, I come into being age after age.
ईशा वास्यमिदं सर्वं यत्किञ्च जगत्यां जगत् । तेन त्यक्तेन भुञ्जीथा मा गृधः कस्यस्विद्धनम् ॥
All this, whatever moves in this changing world, is enveloped by the divine. Enjoy it through renunciation; do not covet what belongs to another.
सर्वं खल्विदं ब्रह्म तज्जलानिति शान्त उपासीत ॥
All this is truly the infinite; from it all things arise, into it they return, and by it they are sustained. One should worship it with a calm mind.
उत्तिष्ठत जाग्रत प्राप्य वरान्निबोधत । क्षुरस्य धारा निशिता दुरत्यया दुर्गं पथस्तत्कवयो वदन्ति ॥
Arise, awake, and learn by approaching those who know. The path is difficult to cross, sharp as a razor's edge — so say the wise.
यथाकारी यथाचारी तथा भवति । साधुकारी साधुर्भवति पापकारी पापो भवति ॥
As one acts and conducts oneself, so one becomes. The one who does good becomes good; the one who does harm becomes harmful.
सदेव सोम्येदमग्र आसीदेकमेवाद्वितीयम् ॥
In the beginning, my dear, this was Being alone — one only, without a second.
न तत्र चक्षुर्गच्छति न वाग्गच्छति नो मनः । न विद्मो न विजानीमो यथैतदनुशिष्यात् ॥
The eye does not reach there, nor speech, nor the mind. We do not know it, nor do we understand how one could teach it.
नैनं छिन्दन्ति शस्त्राणि नैनं दहति पावकः । न चैनं क्लेदयन्त्यापो न शोषयति मारुतः ॥
Weapons cannot cut the self, fire cannot burn it, water cannot wet it, and wind cannot dry it.
प्रज्ञानं ब्रह्म ॥
Consciousness is the eternal reality.
सन्तोष एव पुरुषस्य परं निधानं । सन्तुष्ट एव सततं सुखमेधते हि ॥
Contentment alone is a person's greatest treasure. It is the contented person who continually grows in happiness.
कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन । मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते सङ्गोऽस्त्वकर्मणि ॥
You have a right to perform your duty, but never to the fruits that result from it. Do not let the fruits of action be your motive, and never be attached to inaction either.
उद्यमेन हि सिध्यन्ति कार्याणि न मनोरथैः । न हि सुप्तस्य सिंहस्य प्रविशन्ति मुखे मृगाः ॥
Tasks are accomplished through effort, not mere wishing. Deer do not walk into the mouth of a sleeping lion.
समोऽहं सर्वभूतेषु न मे द्वेष्योऽस्ति न प्रियः । ये भजन्ति तु मां भक्त्या मयि ते तेषु चाप्यहम् ॥
I am equal to all beings; none is hateful or dear to me. But those who worship me with devotion live in me, and I live in them.
ॐ पूर्णमदः पूर्णमिदं पूर्णात्पूर्णमुदच्यते ॥
That is whole and this is whole; from wholeness, wholeness comes forth.
असतो मा सद्गमय । तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय । मृत्योर्मा अमृतं गमय ॥
Lead me from the unreal to the real, from darkness to light, from death to immortality.
श्रीभगवानुवाच । अशोच्यानन्वशोचस्त्वं प्रज्ञावादांश्च भाषसे । गतासूनगतासूंश्च नानुशोचन्ति पण्डिताः ॥
You grieve for those who don't need to be grieved for, yet you speak like a wise person. The truly wise mourn neither for the living nor for the dead.
मातृदेवो भव । पितृदेवो भव । आचार्यदेवो भव । अतिथिदेवो भव ॥
Let your mother be a deity to you. Let your father be a deity to you. Let your teacher be a deity to you. Let your guest be a deity to you.
ध्यायतो विषयान्पुंसः सङ्गस्तेषूपजायते । सङ्गात्सञ्जायते कामः कामात्क्रोधोऽभिजायते ॥
Dwelling on sense objects gives rise to attachment to them; from attachment arises longing, and from longing, anger is born.
तद्विद्धि प्रणिपातेन परिप्रश्नेन सेवया । उपदेक्ष्यन्ति ते ज्ञानं ज्ञानिनस्तत्त्वदर्शिनः ॥
Learn this by approaching a teacher with humility, asking sincere questions, and offering service. Those who have realized the truth will instruct you.
ॐ भद्रं कर्णेभिः शृणुयाम देवाः । भद्रं पश्येमाक्षभिर्यजत्राः ॥
May we hear what is auspicious with our ears. May we see what is auspicious with our eyes.
युक्ताहारविहारस्य युक्तचेष्टस्य कर्मसु । युक्तस्वप्नावबोधस्य योगो भवति दुःखहा ॥
For one who is moderate in eating and recreation, balanced in effort, and regulated in sleep and waking, yoga becomes the destroyer of suffering.
सं गच्छध्वं सं वदध्वं सं वो मनांसि जानताम् ॥
Move together, speak together, let your minds be of one accord.
विहाय कामान्यः सर्वान्पुमांश्चरति निःस्पृहः । निर्ममो निरहङ्कारः स शान्तिमधिगच्छति ॥
The person who gives up all desires and moves without craving, without possessiveness and without ego, attains peace.
न त्वेवाहं जातु नासं न त्वं नेमे जनाधिपाः । न चैव न भविष्यामः सर्वे वयमतः परम् ॥
There was never a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor any of these kings — and none of us will ever cease to exist in the future.
वासांसि जीर्णानि यथा विहाय नवानि गृह्णाति नरोऽपराणि । तथा शरीराणि विहाय जीर्णा न्यन्यानि संयाति नवानि देही ॥
As a person casts off worn-out garments and puts on new ones, so the self casts off worn-out bodies and enters into others that are new.
आ नो भद्राः क्रतवो यन्तु विश्वतः ॥
Let noble thoughts come to us from every direction.
नायमात्मा प्रवचनेन लभ्यो न मेधया न बहुना श्रुतेन । यमेवैष वृणुते तेन लभ्यस्तस्यैष आत्मा विवृणुते तनूं स्वाम् ॥
The self is not attained through discourse, nor through great intellect, nor through much learning. It is attained only by the one it chooses; to that person it reveals its true nature.
न हि ज्ञानेन सदृशं पवित्रमिह विद्यते । तत्स्वयं योगसंसिद्धः कालेनात्मनि विन्दति ॥
In this world, there is nothing as purifying as knowledge. One who is perfected through yoga finds this knowledge within themselves, in time.
उद्धरेदात्मनाऽऽत्मानं नात्मानमवसादयेत् । आत्मैव ह्यात्मनो बन्धुरात्मैव रिपुरात्मनः ॥
Let a person lift themselves by their own mind, not degrade themselves. The mind alone is one's friend, and the mind alone is one's enemy.
श्रेयान्स्वधर्मो विगुणः परधर्मात्स्वनुष्ठितात् । स्वधर्मे निधनं श्रेयः परधर्मो भयावहः ॥
It is better to do one's own duty imperfectly than to do another's duty well. It is better to die performing one's own duty, for another's duty invites danger.
द्यौः शान्तिरन्तरिक्षं शान्तिः पृथिवी शान्तिरापः शान्तिः ॥
May there be peace in the sky, peace in the space between, peace on the earth, peace in the waters.
आपूर्यमाणमचलप्रतिष्ठं समुद्रमापः प्रविशन्ति यद्वत् । तद्वत्कामा यं प्रविशन्ति सर्वे स शान्तिमाप्नोति न कामकामी ॥
As the ocean remains undisturbed by the many rivers that flow into it and merge in its depths, so the person whom desires enter without disturbing them attains peace — not one who chases desires.
मत्तः परतरं नान्यत्किञ्चिदस्ति धनञ्जय । मयि सर्वमिदं प्रोतं सूत्रे मणिगणा इव ॥
There is nothing higher than me, Arjuna. Everything is strung on me, like pearls on a thread.
ये हि संस्पर्शजा भोगा दुःखयोनय एव ते । आद्यन्तवन्तः कौन्तेय न तेषु रमते बुधः ॥
Pleasures born from the senses are, in truth, the source of suffering, for they have a beginning and an end. The wise do not seek their delight there.
अग्निमीळे पुरोहितं यज्ञस्य देवमृत्विजम् । होतारं रत्नधातमम् ॥
I praise Agni, the priest of the sacrifice, the divine minister who bestows the greatest treasures.
अन्तर्गतैर्विकाराद्यैः क्रियाभिश्च पृथग्विधैः । आकार्यैश्च विजानीयाच्चित्तवृत्तिं परस्य च ॥
By inward changes, various actions, and outward behavior, one can come to understand another person's true state of mind.
इति ते ज्ञानमाख्यातं गुह्याद्गुह्यतरं मया । विमृश्यैतदशेषेण यथेच्छसि तथा कुरु ॥
Thus I have explained to you knowledge more secret than any secret. Reflect on it fully, then act as you choose.
तस्मात्सर्वेषु कालेषु मामनुस्मर युध्य च । मय्यर्पितमनोबुद्धिर्मामेवैष्यस्यसंशयम् ॥
Remember me at all times, and carry out your duty. With your mind and intellect offered to me, you will surely reach me.
त्रैगुण्यविषया वेदा निस्त्रैगुण्यो भवार्जुन । निर्द्वन्द्वो नित्यसत्त्वस्थो निर्योगक्षेम आत्मवान् ॥
The scriptures largely concern the three qualities of nature; rise above them, Arjuna. Be free of dualities, established in steady truth.
यो मां पश्यति सर्वत्र सर्वं च मयि पश्यति । तस्याहं न प्रणश्यामि स च मे न प्रणश्यति ॥
For one who sees me everywhere and sees everything in me, I am never lost to them, and they are never lost to me.
यतो वा इमानि भूतानि जायन्ते । येन जातानि जीवन्ति । यत्प्रयन्त्यभिसंविशन्ति । तद्विजिज्ञासस्व । तद्ब्रह्मेति ॥
That from which all beings are born, by which they live once born, and into which they return at death — seek to know that. That is the eternal reality.
तेजः क्षमा धृतिः शौचमद्रोहो नातिमानिता । भवन्ति सम्पदं दैवीमभिजातस्य भारत ॥
Vigor, forgiveness, fortitude, purity, freedom from hatred, and freedom from excessive pride — these belong to one born with divine qualities.
अणोरणीयान्महतो महीयानात्मास्य जन्तोर्निहितो गुहायाम् । तमक्रतुः पश्यति वीतशोको धातुःप्रसादान्महिमानमात्मनः ॥
Smaller than the smallest, greater than the greatest, the self dwells in the heart of every creature. One free of desire and sorrow beholds its greatness through a calm mind.
सत्यं वद । धर्मं चर । स्वाध्यायान्मा प्रमदः ॥
Speak the truth. Practice righteousness. Do not neglect your daily study.
योगस्थः कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय । सिद्ध्यसिद्ध्योः समो भूत्वा समत्वं योग उच्यते ॥
Perform your duties established in yoga, abandoning attachment, and remain even-minded in both success and failure. This evenness of mind is called yoga.
सर्वधर्मान्परित्यज्य मामेकं शरणं व्रज । अहं त्वां सर्वपापेभ्यो मोक्षयिष्यामि मा शुचः ॥
Abandon all other pursuits and take refuge in me alone. I will free you from all suffering; do not grieve.
असंशयं महाबाहो मनो दुर्निग्रहं चलम् । अभ्यासेन तु कौन्तेय वैराग्येण च गृह्यते ॥
The mind is indeed restless and hard to restrain, but it is brought under control through practice and detachment.
तत्त्वमसि श्वेतकेतो ॥
That thou art, Shvetaketu — the ultimate reality and your innermost self are one and the same.
देहिनोऽस्मिन्यथा देहे कौमारं यौवनं जरा । तथा देहान्तरप्राप्तिर्धीरस्तत्र न मुह्यति ॥
Just as the embodied self passes through childhood, youth, and old age in this body, it later takes on another body. The wise are not troubled by this.
प्रणवो धनुः शरो ह्यात्मा ब्रह्म तल्लक्ष्यमुच्यते । अप्रमत्तेन वेद्धव्यं शरवत्तन्मयो भवेत् ॥
Om is the bow, the self is the arrow, and the infinite is called its target. It should be struck with careful attention, becoming one with it as an arrow merges with its mark.
क्रोधाद्भवति सम्मोहः सम्मोहात्स्मृतिविभ्रमः । स्मृतिभ्रंशाद् बुद्धिनाशो बुद्धिनाशात्प्रणश्यति ॥
From anger comes delusion, from delusion comes confused memory, from that the ruin of reason, and from the ruin of reason a person is destroyed.
अन्नाद्भवन्ति भूतानि पर्जन्यादन्नसम्भवः । यज्ञाद्भवति पर्जन्यो यज्ञः कर्मसमुद्भवः ॥
All beings are sustained by food, food comes from rain, rain comes from sacrifice, and sacrifice arises from right action.
सहस्रशीर्षा पुरुषः सहस्राक्षः सहस्रपात् । स भूमिं विश्वतो वृत्वात्यतिष्ठद्दशाङ्गुलम् ॥
The cosmic being has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, a thousand feet. Pervading the earth on every side, it extends ten fingers beyond it.
अनुद्वेगकरं वाक्यं सत्यं प्रियहितं च यत् । स्वाध्यायाभ्यसनं चैव वाङ्मयं तप उच्यते ॥
Speech that causes no distress, that is truthful, pleasant, and beneficial, along with regular study of scripture, is called the discipline of speech.
माता भूमिः पुत्रोऽहं पृथिव्याः ॥
The Earth is my mother, and I am her son.
अमानित्वमदम्भित्वमहिंसा क्षान्तिरार्जवम् । आचार्योपासनं शौचं स्थैर्यमात्मविनिग्रहः ॥
Humility, freedom from pretension, non-violence, patience, honesty, service to a teacher, purity, steadiness, and self-control —
ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः । तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि । धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥
We meditate on the radiant glory of that being who has produced this universe; may that being illuminate our minds.
ईश्वरः सर्वभूतानां हृद्देशेऽर्जुन तिष्ठति । भ्रामयन्सर्वभूतानि यन्त्रारूढानि मायया ॥
The divine dwells in the heart of every being, Arjuna, guiding them through the workings of a world that turns like a great mechanism.
देही नित्यमवध्योऽयं देहे सर्वस्य भारत । तस्मात्सर्वाणि भूतानि न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि ॥
This indweller in the body of every being is eternally indestructible, Arjuna. Therefore you should not grieve for any creature.
ॐ ब्रह्मविदाप्नोति परम् ॥
The knower of the eternal reality attains the highest.
ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् । उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात् ॥
We worship the three-eyed one, fragrant and nourishing all life. As a cucumber is freed from its vine, may we be freed from death, not from immortality.
नात्यश्नतस्तु योगोऽस्ति न चैकान्तमनश्नतः । न चातिस्वप्नशीलस्य जाग्रतो नैव चार्जुन ॥
Yoga is not for one who eats too much or too little, nor for one who sleeps too much or stays awake too much, Arjuna.
एको देवः सर्वभूतेषु गूढः सर्वव्यापी सर्वभूतान्तरात्मा । कर्माध्यक्षः सर्वभूताधिवासः साक्षी चेता केवलो निर्गुणश्च ॥
The one divine reality is hidden within all beings, pervading everything, the inner self of every creature — witness, awareness, alone, and beyond all qualities.
स यत्र सोम्येमा षोडश कलाः पुरुषं प्रति संपद्यन्ते ॥
When these sixteen aspects of a person return and merge back into their source, one attains that state beyond division.
बहूनां जन्मनामन्ते ज्ञानवान्मां प्रपद्यते । वासुदेवः सर्वमिति स महात्मा सुदुर्लभः ॥
After many lifetimes, one who has attained true knowledge takes refuge in me, understanding that all this is divine. Such a soul is exceedingly rare.
यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत । अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम् ॥
Whenever righteousness declines and unrighteousness rises, O Arjuna, I manifest myself.
सर्वं ह्येतद् ब्रह्मायमात्मा ब्रह्म सोऽयमात्मा चतुष्पात् ॥
All this is truly the infinite. This self is the infinite. This very self has four aspects.
अहमात्मा गुडाकेश सर्वभूताशयस्थितः । अहमादिश्च मध्यं च भूतानामन्त एव च ॥
I am the self, seated in the heart of every being. I am the beginning, the middle, and the end of all beings.
अहिंसा सत्यमस्तेयं शौचमिन्द्रियनिग्रहः । एतं सामासिकं धर्मं चातुर्वर्ण्येऽब्रवीन्मनुः ॥
Non-violence, truthfulness, not stealing, purity, and control of the senses — this, in brief, is the shared duty taught for all.
अहं सर्वस्य प्रभवो मत्तः सर्वं प्रवर्तते । इति मत्वा भजन्ते मां बुधा भावसमन्विताः ॥
I am the source of all things; everything proceeds from me. Understanding this, the wise worship me with deep feeling.
न जायते म्रियते वा कदाचि न्नायं भूत्वा भविता वा न भूयः । अजो नित्यः शाश्वतोऽयं पुराणो न हन्यते हन्यमाने शरीरे ॥
The self is never born and never dies. It does not come into being and will never cease to be. It is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, and undying — it is not slain when the body is slain.
अयं निजः परो वेति गणना लघुचेतसाम् । उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम् ॥
"This one is mine, that one is a stranger" is the thinking of the small-minded. For those of noble character, the whole world is one family.
परोपकाराय फलन्ति वृक्षाः परोपकाराय वहन्ति नद्यः । परोपकाराय दुहन्ति गावः परोपकारार्थमिदं शरीरम् ॥
Trees bear fruit for the sake of others, rivers flow for the sake of others, cows give milk for the sake of others — this body, too, exists for the sake of others.
सत्त्वं रजस्तम इति गुणाः प्रकृतिसम्भवाः । निबध्नन्ति महाबाहो देहे देहिनमव्ययम् ॥
Goodness, passion, and inertia are the three qualities born of nature. They bind the imperishable self to the body, O Arjuna.
ॐ सह नाववतु । सह नौ भुनक्तु । सह वीर्यं करवावहै । तेजस्वि नावधीतमस्तु मा विद्विषावहै ॥
May we be protected together. May we be nourished together. May we work together with vigor. May our study be illuminating, and may we never hate one another.
सत्यमेव जयते नानृतं सत्येन पन्था विततो देवयानः । येनाक्रमन्त्यृषयो ह्याप्तकामा यत्र तत्सत्यस्य परमं निधानम् ॥
Truth alone triumphs, not falsehood. Through truth the divine path is spread out, by which the sages, their desires fulfilled, reach the ultimate treasury of truth.
सत्यं ब्रूयात्प्रियं ब्रूयान्न ब्रूयात्सत्यमप्रियम् । प्रियं च नानृतं ब्रूयादेष धर्मः सनातनः ॥
Speak the truth, speak what is pleasant. Do not speak an unpleasant truth. Do not speak a pleasant falsehood either. This is the eternal way.
यथा हि एकेन चक्रेण न रथस्य गतिर्भवेत् । एवं पुरुषकारेण विना दैवं न सिध्यति ॥
Just as a chariot cannot move on a single wheel, destiny alone does not bear fruit without human effort.
यस्मान्नोद्विजते लोको लोकान्नोद्विजते च यः । हर्षामर्षभयोद्वेगैर्मुक्तो यः स च मे प्रियः ॥
One by whom no one is troubled, and who is not troubled by anyone, who is free from joy, envy, fear, and anxiety, is dear to me.
जातस्य हि ध्रुवो मृत्युर्ध्रुवं जन्म मृतस्य च । तस्मादपरिहार्येऽर्थे न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि ॥
Death is certain for the one who is born, and birth is certain for the one who dies. So you should not grieve over what cannot be avoided.
मात्रास्पर्शास्तु कौन्तेय शीतोष्णसुखदुःखदाः । आगमापायिनोऽनित्यास्तांस्तितिक्षस्व भारत ॥
The contact of the senses with their objects gives rise to heat and cold, pleasure and pain. These come and go, and are not permanent — learn to endure them.
अनन्याश्चिन्तयन्तो मां ये जनाः पर्युपासते । तेषां नित्याभियुक्तानां योगक्षेमं वहाम्यहम् ॥
For those who worship me with single-minded devotion, always united with me, I carry what they lack and preserve what they have.
आयुः कर्म च वित्तं च विद्या निधनमेव च । पञ्चैतानि हि सृज्यन्ते गर्भस्थस्यैव देहिनः ॥
Lifespan, one's actions, wealth, knowledge, and the manner of death — these five are said to be determined even while a person is still in the womb.
विद्या ददाति विनयं विनयाद्याति पात्रताम् । पात्रत्वाद्धनमाप्नोति धनाद्धर्मं ततः सुखम् ॥
Knowledge gives humility, from humility comes worthiness, from worthiness one gains means, from means comes righteous conduct, and from that, true happiness.
यद्यदाचरति श्रेष्ठस्तत्तदेवेतरो जनः । स यत्प्रमाणं कुरुते लोकस्तदनुवर्तते ॥
Whatever action a great person performs, ordinary people follow. Whatever standard they set, the world follows it.
मौनं सर्वार्थसाधनम् ॥ (सुभाषितसंग्रह)
Silence accomplishes every purpose.
यदा सर्वे प्रमुच्यन्ते कामा येऽस्य हृदि श्रिताः । अथ मर्त्योऽमृतो भवत्यत्र ब्रह्म समश्नुते ॥
When all the desires that dwell in the heart are let go, the mortal becomes immortal and attains the eternal, even in this life.
अद्वेष्टा सर्वभूतानां मैत्रः करुण एव च । निर्ममो निरहङ्कारः समदुःखसुखः क्षमी ॥
One who hates no being, who is friendly and compassionate, free from possessiveness and ego, equal in joy and sorrow, and forgiving —
प्रकृतेः क्रियमाणानि गुणैः कर्माणि सर्वशः । अहङ्कारविमूढात्मा कर्ताहमिति मन्यते ॥
All actions everywhere are carried out by the qualities of nature. One confused by ego thinks, 'I am the one doing this.'
ॐ पूर्णमदः पूर्णमिदं पूर्णात्पूर्णमुदच्यते । पूर्णस्य पूर्णमादाय पूर्णमेवावशिष्यते ॥
That is whole, this is whole; wholeness comes from wholeness. Take wholeness from wholeness, and what remains is still whole.
यज्ञार्थात्कर्मणोऽन्यत्र लोकोऽयं कर्मबन्धनः । तदर्थं कर्म कौन्तेय मुक्तसङ्गः समाचर ॥
Except for action done as a sacred offering, this world is bound by action. Therefore, O Arjuna, perform your duty for that sake alone, free from attachment.
